If you are bargaining with “one more thing”, you are not doing one more thing, you are doing sleep avoidance with a fancy hat on.
Bedtime is when your ideas start feeling urgent, brilliant, and morally important, even if the idea is “rearrange the cutlery”.
Use the “tomorrow test”: if it would still matter after breakfast, write one line about it and leave it for morning.
Set a closing ritual for your brain, like turning down a shop sign: lights lower, screens off, same song or page, same order every night.
When your mind starts pitching worries, treat it like late-night customer service: “Thanks, we’re closed, please call again in daylight.”
Make sleep the productive choice: you are not quitting early, you are charging the only device that runs your whole life.
If you keep scrolling because you dread the silence, bring a gentle noise instead: a boring audiobook, a fan, or rain sounds that give your thoughts nothing to bite.
