A short field manual for experienced household legends
Written with affection for two very lovely people and one important cat called Suki.
Some men spend their lives fixing things.
• Cars
• Houses
• Machines
• Other people’s problems
After enough years of this, people start assuming you can fix almost anything.
Including Gravity
You may know someone like this.
A man who can:
• Rebuild an engine
• Repair half a house
• Create beautiful things in metal
Sometimes even make award trophies for famous musicians.
People like that are rare.
They tend to be:
• Capable
• Independent
• A little chaotic
• And quietly generous
They also tend to help everyone else first.
Which means their own list of jobs grows slowly over time.
The plan is usually simple.
“I’ll sort that later.”
Later is a useful word.
But houses operate on a slightly different schedule.
A house slowly gathers small jobs.
• A radiator here
• Electrics out for over a year!
• A loose floorboard there
• A leak that keeps on dripping
Left alone long enough, these jobs begin organising themselves.
Eventually they form something experts call:
A Situation.
This does not mean the capable man has failed.
It simply means the house has started collecting more quests than one hero can complete.
At this stage experienced household legends unlock a new skill.
Delegation.
Delegation does not mean giving up.
It means choosing the right person for the job.
• Just like choosing the right tool
• Just like choosing the right part
Think of it as a promotion.
You are no longer the mechanic under the car.
You are the chief engineer of the entire operation.
The job changes slightly.
• You still decide what needs doing
• You still decide how it should be done
• You simply do not have to carry every radiator upstairs
Good leadership sometimes sounds like this:
“That job needs doing.
Let’s get the right person.”
There is a quiet benefit to this.
• Repairs happen sooner
• The house behaves better
• Everyone relaxes a little
Most families do not expect one man to fix everything forever.
They just want the house to be warm, safe, and comfortable.
Your family also knows something important.
Over many years you have:
• Built things
• Fixed things
• Helped many people
That history is seen and appreciated.
This next stage is simply an upgrade.
Moving from:
Doing everything personally
to
Running the operation wisely.
You still keep:
• The tools
• The experience
• The final say
You simply gain a small team.
Which is probably overdue.
The result is simple.
• The house runs better
• Everyone worries less
• Life becomes a little easier
Which means more time for the important things.
• Your Projects
• A good conversation
• And keeping an eye on Suki
The capable man remains in charge.
He simply decides which jobs deserve his time.
And occasionally, he allows a small team to help.
Because even the best engineers sometimes deserve a break.
Preferably with a cat nearby.
